Dr. Jyothsna Karlapalem is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. Her expertise is working with patients who have co-occurring disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders. She has additional training in treating trauma and is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, level II (CCTP-II). Dr. Karlapalem views her patients through the lens of trauma and attachment needs. While providing expert medication management for her patients Dr. Karlapalem also provides integrated treatment utilizing elements of motivational interviewing, compassion-focused therapy, mindfulness, behavioral therapy, and supportive psychotherapy. She is also a great proponent of psychoeducation, exercise, and yoga as therapeutic tools. She has expertise in treating tobacco use disorder and is passionate about fighting big tobacco. Dr. Karlapalem has additional training in community reinforcement.

Dr. Karlapalem obtained her medical degree from the Maharashtra University of Medical Sciences in India in 2006. She has experience working as a general physician in the Indian Army prior to moving to the US. She completed her residency in Psychiatry at SUNY health science center in Brooklyn, NY in 2015 where she gained a lot of experience treating patients with dual diagnoses and patients who need acute psychiatric care. She completed her fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry from Icahn school of medicine at Mount Sinai, Roosevelt hospital in 2016. She worked as the medical director of Wakefield Recovery Center at Montefiore Medical center in the Bronx prior to joining SoHoMD. At Montefiore, she spearheaded the development of many new programs like overdose prevention programs, friend, continuing care programs, and tobacco treatment programs. She also taught addiction-related topics to medical students, residents, and fellows from the Albert Einstein school of medicine. 

Outside of work, Dr.Karlapalem loves to read books on audibles. If you are a fellow bibliophile, don’t be surprised to get recommendations about books! She also loves to cook yummy food for her family and tries her hand at gardening.

Most of our providers are in-network with the following plans: Cigna, Meritain Health, Optum (Oscar, Oxford Health Plans, UnitedHealthcare) and Wellfleet. Fees for treatment vary depending on length of appointment and type of treatment received. Payment should be made at the time of the visit. We do accept all major credit cards, HSA, and FSA.
