Dr. Julie Brownley earned a Ph.D. in molecular medicine and M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Residency training was completed in adult psychiatry at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She received focused training at Johns Hopkins in reproductive psychiatry, a division of psychiatry focused on treating women throughout the life cycle.
Dr. Brownley evaluates and treats patients, provides expert opinion consultations to other physicians, provides interdisciplinary training to community physicians, and leads staff professional skills development and education. She specializes in the management of mental health issues associated with menstruation, pregnancy, the postpartum period, perimenopause, menopause, infertility, pregnancy loss, and birth trauma. She is an expert in the evaluation and treatment of women across all ages with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, insomnia, and grief.
Dr. Brownley provides care that is focused on the individual needs of her patients, working to meet women exactly where they are. Each person brings their genetic makeup, past events and experiences, personality traits, and habits of mind and body. Therefore, an effective treatment plan must be tailored to the individual and requires a multifaceted approach. Dr. Brownley prioritizes using the fewest medications possible to achieve symptom remission and encourages non-pharmacologic interventions as part of her treatment plans.
Women account for more than half of people with psychiatric disorders. Despite this, training in women’s psychiatry is not mandatory for psychiatrists or other mental health professionals. Thus, women often struggle to get comprehensive and knowledgeable mental health care. Dr. Brownley is passionate about ending this disparity in the field of psychiatry by training providers in women’s psychiatry and dedicating her career to the treatment of women’s mental health.
Outside of her work with SohoMD, Dr. Brownley is an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
